MICHAELBRAILEY

You probably know MICHAELBRAILEY for his soaring falsetto in the experimental electronic underground. As a DJ, the electronic musician and multimedia composer’s studious approach to mixing pushes rhythm and danceability to breaking point: CDJ misuse, mathematically-precise polyrhythmic double-drops and flexi-BPM stretching. Tracks are treated as raw materials to be bent, spliced and broken in real time. The resulting mixes are dizzying assemblages - online oddities sutured to sound-system gems, refracted through the afterimages of a queer awakening in North West England. Both solo and as a core member of the now-defunct all-star DJ collective boygirl he helped define a moment of excess, becoming known for edits that alloy disparate musical references into volatile and ecstatic hybrids. His approach has earned him recognition across the underground, with performances at Berlin’s OHM and Panke, London’s Ormside Projects, and Manchester’s The White Hotel, among others. MICHAELBRAILEY has collaborated with artists including electronic musician ZULI, rapper-producer Iceboy Violet, ensemble decoder, composer Alexander Schubert, and visual artist Tomasz Skibicki. His solo and collaborative work has appeared on Astral Plane and Subtext; he has hosted radio shows on NTS and ma3azef, supported and performed alongside artists such as Tirzah and Colin Self, and has been featured in Pitchfork, Dazed, FACT and AQNB.
